The busy girl

Lauren is quite the busy girl these days. There seems to be some sort of new little development each day lately which is just amazing to me.

Standing tall
She started pulling herself up to stand over two weeks ago. Once she gets on her feet, she is so proud of herself that she giggles and claps her hands with excitement.

Chatty
Lauren's new word is "up". Everything is "Up, up, up".

Greeter
It's a big event when Daddy comes home from work and walks through the front door. No matter what Lauren is doing when we hear the door open, she races towards it on her hands and knees. She gets so excited hearing Daddy's voice and seeing him that she collapses to the ground on her way to him and starts wiggling about with excitement. It is truly the sweetest thing ever.

Feel a bit peckish?
Hungry, hungry, hungry. That is what Lauren has been since the day she was born. With table food, this is no exception. Yes, there are the staples of Gerber puffs and Cheerios but her favorites are chicken, black beans, and sweet potato fries (baked, of course). She will try anything. Loved the tortilla soup I was eating for lunch one day. Enjoys chicken taco salad and basically goes crazy for anything with taco seasoning. The kitchen has become a very interesting place in the Lee household.

Okay, enough chit chat. I know what you're waiting for. Here's a few photos of the little bean:

Snuggly warm after her bath...

Ignoring Mommy ... as usual.

Prison Break

Lauren's new routine when waking up from her nap is to grab and tug at the crib slats and whine her little heart out until I come in to get her. It's as though she is clutching jail bars ... pleading for "that Mommy lady" to break her out of prison. What a drama queen! Here's my little princess in action:

Lauren at nine months

Lauren's stats from yesterday's nine month check up:

Weight: 20 lbs 12 1/2 oz
Length: 27 1/4 in

She was quite the charmer and won everyone over in the pediatrician's office immediately ... until the flu shot was administered. She really made her mark after that. Sigh.

I was convinced that she was at least 25 lbs (so did Grandpa Lee)! We're okay with being proven wrong. Anyway, we have been given the green light from the doc to give her anything and everything food-wise except whole milk and honey so we've been having lots of fun trying new foods. What a messy affair!

Here's a photo of Lauren enjoying pizza crust ... her new favorite food!

Uncle Johnny

Lauren had a long overdue visit from her Uncle Johnny over the Labor Day Weekend. Lately, Lauren seems to be wary of men other than her daddy (let's try to keep it that way until she's 45), and she cried whenever she saw him. Eventually Uncle Johnny got past her defenses by getting down on the floor to play with her...

Lauren is like a) Mommy, b) Daddy, c) both, or d) none of the above

When does a child begin to develop a personality? According to Dr Sharon Ramey, Child Behaviorist, she states:

"A child's personality begins to form before the child is born. A child's temperament—whether the child is shy or outgoing, quick to react or slow to react—some of those things are probably influenced by biology and what we inherit. But the wonderful thing about personality is that it's not fixed, and how parents respond to a baby can help shape the personality in a way that will be to a child's advantage. You want a child who is open to experiences, not too much of a daredevil and not too shy, but ultimately your child will be his or her own person."

So what she and others have said is that our dynamic little ones are pre-programmed, to a degree, with wiring from mommy and daddy before they even enter this world. But as her parents/guardian angels/providers after her birth, we can exert a limited amount of influence and control to round out our little bean.

Since Lauren's birth, Lorraine and I have been engaged in an ongoing discussion about which of Lauren's characteristics we can connect to one of us, and who "she got that from". Generally, we can safely attribute all "princess" behavior to her dear mother, and all "anally retentive, type A personality" characteristics to moi. There are also a few wacky things that Lauren does that makes me scratch my head and wonder just how realistic deviant genes are.

Regardless, here's what we've noted so far:

Like Mommy (written by Daddy):
- Doesn't like green vegetables (they both seem to have a gag reflex)
- Likes her food to be given in a neat presentation and order (not mixed or touching each other)
- Doesn't approve of unhygienic bodily conditions (she's never liked wearing a wet or dirty diaper for one second afterwards, enjoys her nightly baths, wipes her own mouth clean when eating)
- Is a cranky-pants when she doesn't get her sleep
- Defiant, smart-ass-like qualities

Like Daddy (from one woman's [Mommy's] point of view):
- Very inquisitive of all things seen, said, and heard (often leading to trouble)
- Enjoys listening to herself talk (often not making any sense)
- Selectively distributes cuddles (only when she's good and ready)
- Won't stop until she gets what she wants
- Loves meal times

Like both:
- Stubborn
- Very stubborn

Like who?:
- Insists on pooping while standing up. Yes, it's a bizarre act that's been going on for as long as we can remember. Lauren's been inclined to stand on her feet since she was a month old. When time to do #2, and in mommy or daddy's lap, she reaches up to be held upright, stands, grunts, bends forward at her waist, bases her head on your chest, and poops. We know she's finished when her body goes limp and she begins a satisfied, soothing babble. Perhaps this situation is one where we should exercise our parental capabilities to "help shape the personality in a way that will be to a child's advantage", as Dr Ramey suggests. Here she is in action...
